What is Fortekor?

Fortekor is a medication containing benazepril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. In simple terms, it acts on a hormonal system that influences blood pressure and the heart’s workload. By reducing certain vasoconstrictive mechanisms, Fortekor helps blood vessels relax and may contribute to lowering pressure and reducing strain on the heart.
In addition to its cardiovascular effects, Fortekor is also used in the management of certain kidney conditions, as it can help better control parameters associated with the progression of kidney disease, according to the treatment plan established by the veterinarian.

What is Fortekor used for?

Fortekor is used in dogs and cats as part of the management of:

  • heart failure, to reduce cardiac workload and support circulation
  • certain kidney diseases, based on veterinary assessment, often in combination with other measures such as diet, blood pressure control, and blood monitoring

The goal is to improve comfort, exercise tolerance, and to support cardiac and renal function as part of a comprehensive treatment strategy.

How and how often should I give Fortekor to my pet?

Fortekor is administered orally, most often once daily, but the exact frequency depends on the treatment plan provided by your veterinarian. As this medication is often part of long-term therapy, establishing a consistent routine is especially beneficial.
Helpful tips:

  • give the medication at a regular time each day
  • because it is palatable, many pets take it like a treat; otherwise, it can be hidden in a small amount of food
  • attend follow-up visits as recommended, as your veterinarian may adjust the dose based on clinical response and test results
