What is Clopidogrel?
Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medication. Platelets are small blood cells involved in clot formation. In certain medical conditions, they may become overly prone to sticking together and contribute to the formation of blood clots (thrombi). Clopidogrel reduces platelet aggregation, helping to lower the risk of blood vessel obstruction.
In veterinary medicine, it is most commonly used in animals at increased risk of thromboembolic events, particularly cats with certain heart diseases, but also in dogs and cats depending on the clinical profile determined by the veterinarian.

What is Clopidogrel used for?
Clopidogrel is used to help prevent the formation of blood clots. It may be prescribed:
- in cats with cardiomyopathy and a risk of thromboembolism
- in dogs or cats when the veterinarian determines that thrombotic risk is high based on medical history, imaging, or other factors
- in situations where an antiplatelet agent is preferred over other options
The goal is preventive, aiming to reduce the likelihood that a clot will form and migrate, which can lead to medical emergencies such as pain, paralysis, or organ damage.

How and how often should I give Clopidogrel to my pet?
Clopidogrel is administered orally, usually once daily, according to veterinary prescription. Because the goal is to maintain a consistent antiplatelet effect, regular dosing is essential.
Best practices:
- administer the medication at a fixed time each day to minimize missed doses
- if your pet has a sensitive stomach, your veterinarian may recommend giving it with food, depending on the case
- monitor for any signs of abnormal bleeding, such as bleeding gums, black stools, or bruising
Do not stop the medication without veterinary guidance, as discontinuation may increase the risk of clot formation in at-risk animals.

What are the side effects and precautions associated with Clopidogrel?
Clopidogrel is generally well tolerated, but some animals may experience mild and temporary side effects. It is also important to remain alert for signs related to bleeding:
- digestive upset, including vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite
- bleeding, which is less common but significant, such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bruising, discoloured urine, or dark stools
Essential precautions:
- avoid combining clopidogrel with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) without veterinary approval, as this may increase bleeding risk
- inform your veterinarian if surgery or dental procedures are planned
- disclose all medications and supplements your pet is receiving
